Wisdom teeth can be a real pain. More so because they serve no purpose. Believe it or not, but these small things that emerge at just the wrong place don’t happen to every individual. There are some lucky people who just don’t have to go through the pain of getting wisdom teeth. Also known as 3rd molars, they got the name “wisdom teeth” because of the age at which they appear — between 18 and 25 years.
We wanted to give some ready remedies for those who suffer from the pain caused by wisdom teeth. The list below can be shared with those in need.
1. Warm salt water
Salt is a natural disinfectant. Mix salt in lukewarm water and rinse your mouth with it. This gives instant relief to toothaches. Doctors usually suggest this remedy as a first aid step. One needs to rinse their mouth for a few minutes and repeat the process 4-5 times in a day. This remedy is not only easy but is also very effective.
2. Baking soda paste
There usually is severe swelling that comes along with a wisdom tooth. Baking soda can come to your rescue during this time. Simply add baking soda to your regular toothpaste and apply it to the wisdom tooth directly. This should relieve you of the pain within just a few minutes.
3. Applying ice
We all know that ice is the first thing to grab to cure any kind of swelling. Just use the ice pack on the side cheek where you have an aching tooth. Use the 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off method and repeat it several times a day, whenever you feel acute pain. This method is useful in getting rid of inflammation and swelling.
4. Vanilla extract
If you thought vanilla can only be used to make yummy shakes or mouth-watering cakes, you’ll be glad to find out that there are actually many qualities of this fragrant ingredient. It is of great help in emerging wisdom tooth ache. Simply pour a few drops of vanilla extract onto a cotton swab and keep it on the aching tooth for around 15 minutes. Relax for a few minutes and you will realize that the pain is gradually reducing.
5. Benzocaine
Many doctors prescribe benzocaine for an ailing tooth. This gel-based ointment should be applied to the affected tooth directly. It is also advised to clean the area around the wisdom tooth before applying the gel. However, it is advised to consult a doctor before using it for kids below the age of 2.
6. Tea bags
Various kinds of tea bags are advised to get rid of the pain caused by a wisdom tooth. Black tea is generally prescribed for the dual benefits it offers. While the warmth of the tea helps in reducing swelling, the tea bag put directly on the aching tooth reduces the pain to a great extent. The tannic acid present inside tea helps reduce inflammation.
7. Cloves
Cloves have been recommended to us even by our grandparents. What they suggested was to keep a whole clove right on top of the aching tooth. Its anesthetic properties help in numbing the affected area, while antibacterial and antiseptic qualities make sure that the area doesn’t get infected. One may also use clove oil on a cotton swab. If you feel the flavor of cloves is too strong, you may dilute it with olive oil.
8. Turmeric mouthwash
Turmeric is known for its antiseptic qualities. The reason why is that it is generally recommended for wisdom tooth problems. The ingredient has also been mentioned in Ayurveda for its healing, analgesic, and antibacterial properties. One may add a few pinches of it in water and use it as a mouthwash.
9. Peppermint
Peppermint is usually recommended for a sore throat. Not only does it give you instant relief from pain, but its nice aroma lets you to forget the problems that come with the pain of a wisdom tooth. One may pack a few peppermint leaves and put them on the affected tooth for 15-20 minutes. Or peppermint oil can also be applied for an equally relieving effect.
10. Chilled cucumber
When you have a toothache, anything chilled sounds so good. A cucumber’s cooling effect will instantly take away the pain. You may cut the cucumber in small slices that will fit in the tooth where the ache is. While the chill of the cucumber numbs the hurting tooth, its juice will further ease the pain. You may also grate the cucumber and apply it to the wisdom tooth for similar effects.
11. Onions
It may sound absurd to some, considering the foul smell of onions, but they can help in healing a toothache like a professional. Simply cut out a piece that fits in your mouth perfectly and put it on the affected area. Onions have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help in removing bacteria from the mouth and minimizing the pain.
