 Black Spots on the Teeth
Black spots can occur anywhere on your teeth – be it on the front or at the back. They are caused by the erosion of the enamel on the teeth. The staining or black spots reflect poorly on one’s dental hygiene and general habits. If the staining is not very severe, then there are home remedies that can help you get rid of the black spots. Before trying the home remedies, it is essential to find out what is causing the black spots. This will help you address the problem accordingly.

Possible Causes of Black Spots on the Teeth
  • Eating foods that are loaded with sugar or drinking carbonated beverages– Foods like these are breeding ground for bacteria. They feed on the sugar and destroy the enamel on the teeth in the process. Hence cut down on such foods totally if possible. Else, rinse your mouth every time you eat something sweet.
  • Smoking is another cause of teeth discoloration. Habitual smoking makes your teeth colored brown or black. Our advise would be to kick the habit altogether. Else, you can try one of the home remedies mentioned below.
  • Consuming too much tea or coffee can also cause staining. These beverages contain caffeine which stains the teeth to a brown or black color.
  • Chewing tobacco is another cause for black spots on the teeth. It is not only harmful for the teeth but also for overall health.
  • Not rinsing your mouth well or not brushing your teeth properly can also cause black spots. Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day and rinse your mouth after every meal to get rid of any food particles deposited between your teeth.

Home Remedies for Black Spots on the Teeth
  1. Brush your teeth twice a day. Swish your mouth with some water or mouthwash every time you eat or drink something.
  2. Do not forget to floss your teeth to remove any food particles deposited in the interdental gap. This is one of the major breeding grounds for bacteria.
  3. Use a straw while drinking caffeinated drinks.
  4. Add a pinch of baking soda to your toothpaste before you brush. Baking soda has abrasive properties which help get rid of superfluous stains.
  5. Rubbing the inside of an orange peel helps in removing stains and spots from the teeth.
  6. For more stubborn spots, make a paste of baking soda with water and directly apply it in circular motion on the teeth to scrub it well and rid it of any stains.
  7. Salt also helps in cleaning your teeth. Rubbing your teeth with a pinch of salt restores the mineral content in your teeth and rubs away spots on prolonged use.
