Danes Are the Happiest People in the World Thanks To These 7 Important Things

Denmark is consistently ranked among the happiest countries in the world. Many Danes cite their long-held concept of finding joy in the everyday comforts of life as a big contributor to their happiness. The name of this concept? Hygge.
Hygge is mostly associated with a feeling of comfort, safety, and belonging. Ever sat wrapped up in a blanket with a warm cup of tea in your hands? Congratulations! You’ve experienced Hygge.
Here are a few things you can do to bring the Hygge-factor into your home and life this year!

1. Invest in some candles

Danes burn more candles than any other country in the world, and for good reason. Real flickering flames, gorgeous scents, and a gentle amber glow make for an enchanting atmosphere.
Tip: Candles with wooden wicks also give off a crackling log fire sound as they burn — very Hygge.

2. Always keep a supply of your favorite hot drink

Coffee, cocoa, or perhaps something with a bit of a kick — hot drinks are a surefire way to up the coziness factor of any situation, so make sure you always have your favorite on hand to warm you from the inside out.

3. Connect

While it can be felt alone, the sense of being around those you love is widely agreed to be a key factor in Hygge. Invite your friends to your house, cook a comforting meal, and just talk — no phones, no distractions. Be in the moment.

4. Get cozy

Sweaters, blankets, thick socks: comfort is essential to Hygge. So for those nights when the rain and winter winds roll in, wrap up yourself, your pets, and everyone you love in the coziest things you can find, and get ready to experience some serious Hygge.

5. Slow down

In amongst all the trappings of Hygge — the lights and hot drinks, blankets and warm fires — is the notion of actually taking the time to enjoy it all. The world won’t stop turning because you’ve taken some time to enjoy life!

6. Embrace the natural

A lot of Scandinavian interiors involve plenty of natural woods and plants — bringing the outdoors in. Get yourself some plants, and enjoy how they’ll make any room feel lighter and airier.

7. Cook from scratch

No out-of-the-plastic ready meals for Hygge — get some friends together, and create a gorgeous fresh meal from scratch. Pair it with some mulled wine and feel the happiness vibes set in!
